What I Learned About Tech Comm at the 2024 STC Summit

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending the 2024 STC Summit in Bloomington, Minnesota, alongside my colleagues and friends from the Future Technical Communicators (FTC) club at the University of Central Florida and the STC Florida Chapter. As a student volunteer and first-time attendee, I am grateful to have had the chance to travel to our field’s annual premier conference through the support of our faculty advisors, FTC-STC Florida leadership, and donors.

Building Presentation Skills for CTE Talks

Unless you use an assistive device to communicate verbally, you don’t compose a written sentence first before pronouncing it in conversation. Such speech spontaneity is certainly convenient, but it poses the danger when giving a formal talk to a group (perhaps of classmates) that what is spontaneously said will be confusing, ineffective, or both. So talk design, like text design, becomes the duty of everyone who wants to explain something (complex) by speaking to a group effectively. And for most people, such talk design needs to be explicitly taught and learned.

Manager’s Column, Q1 2024

Hello IDL SIG members,

Spring has sprung in the Pacific Northwest, and I’m enjoying a day of sunshine after weeks of cold, rainy weather. The colorful flowers, brilliant sunshine, nesting birds, and budding trees all bring hope into view.   

With hope on the horizon, I’m looking forward to May and the 2024 Summit in Bloomington, Minnesota, May 17–19. The conference is conveniently located near the Mall of America and close to the airport. The Mall boasts many fun activities for kids of all ages, special events, food & drink, and shopping. I plan to check out the SEALIFE Aquarium and Nickelodeon© Theme Park to catch a roller coaster ride.

Incidentally, the STC Summit is the premier educational experience and a place to network with folks who love, promote, and share technical communication.

Hurry! The 2024 STC Summit is around the corner, so start planning for this educational and fun adventure. Get ready for a Summit experience that breaks the mold, providing more opportunities to network and learn from fellow practitioners, dive deeper into intensives on important topics, and keep up with the industry.

Some of the IDL SIG team will be at the conference, so come join us for our panel conversation about instructional design, at the CAC table in the Expo Hall, and for special meetups.
