Spread the word that students can be published BEFORE they graduate!

Student Outreach Article Competition

Dear Professor/Instructor,

The Instructional Design & Learning (IDL) Special Interest Group of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) invites your graduate- and undergraduate-level students to become published before graduating. Here are the basics of the program:

  • Undergraduate- or graduate-level students submit an original article to us about some aspect of instructional design. If we choose to publish it in our newsletter, IDeaL: Design for Learning, the student receives a complimentary STC student membership, which includes a membership in the IDL Special Interest Group (SIG). (Students do not have to be enrolled in a program related to instructional design to submit an article.)
  • With the student’s permission, once we publish their article we will submit it to STC’s Technical Communication Body of Knowledge (TCBOK). If the editors decide to include the student’s article in the TCBOK, he or she earns an additionalyear’s STC/IDL membership (or an equivalent award if they no longer qualify for student membership because they’ve graduated).
  • Once published, students can link to their article from their résumé and possibly on their LinkedIn profile page,ideally gaining an edge in becoming employed after graduation. See our Q1 2017 and Q2 2017 newsletters for examples of articles by students who have already taken advantage of this program.

A flier describing the program in more detail is on our website. It directs students to http://www.stcidlsig.org/students/youcanbepublished/ to get the entry packet for submitting an article. The packet contains Frequently Asked Questions, a list of suggested topics, contributor guidelines, and more.

Kindly do the following to inform your students of this offer:

  • Print the promotional flyer 2017-2018 and post it where students will see it.
  • Mention the opportunity when your class meets.
  • Forward this post to students.
  • Stress the deadline of December 10, 2017.

About the webinar

Creating a vision that is shared among designers, subject matter experts, clients, and leaders is one of the fundamental challenges that content professionals must overcome. In the learning design space, many project stakeholders lack the background knowledge, experiences, or “language” to relate their vision in ways that instructional designers can effectively implement.

In this session, Phylise will introduce an easy-to-use and powerful visual learning design method called Learning Environment Modeling (LEM) — a unique visual language created to enhance communication and foster collaboration between instructional design professionals and diverse stakeholders.

During the session, you will learn how to visually communicate the correlation of specific design elements to learning results and use Learning Environment Modeling (LEM) to collaborate effectively with blended learning project teams. Phylise will talk about how to facilitate more effective communication throughout the design process, and how to use a learning environment design system and tools to remove or reduce ego-centric behaviors and attitudes during the design process.

Join us as we explore how LEM can support creative learning experience design and remove barriers to communication throughout the learning design process.

As a virtual community, with all of our members scattered across the globe, we do not have the same opportunities as geographically-based communities to meet up face-to-face. Since 2013, we have hosted the IDL SIG Virtual Open House (VOH) so that new and prospective IDL SIG members could learn more about our community’s mission and goals, learn more about member benefits, and meet some of our leaders and volunteers.

During our VOH, participants have always had the opportunity to ask questions about the SIG and what we offer.

Virtual Party, too!

We’d like to combine our VOH with a virtual party (VP), where we would encourage all attendees to share a photo or story. The VP (not be confused with Vice President!) we hope will add a very human, personal side to our VOH. Hey, it is all about making real, enduring connections!
