The STC Summit in Chicago was awesome! After several years of isolation, it was amazing to hug and talk to STC friends, and wave to those who wanted to keep their distance. Some wore masks, others held their arms out for hugs, and the remaining greeted with a fist or elbow bump, handshakes, or smiling eyes over a mask. The smiles were frequent, and the laughter was abundant. Because the number of attendees was modest, the atmosphere was congenial and intimate. About 6 months ago I saw a job listing for a “UX writer” for a newfangled digital therapeutics company. At the time, I had never heard of UX, but the job description captured my imagination. Basically, it consisted of taking health information and presenting it in a way that non-experts could read and understand. With a Master’s in Applied Linguistics and fairly wide-ranging employment experience, I didn’t have the exact experience to put together a strong application for that position, but I wasn’t far off. Our SIG continued to welcome new and returning members throughout second quarter. I spent a bit of time analyzing the membership roster because I was curious about who joins IDL. About half the members have been STC members for fewer than ten years, an indication of growing interest in the SIG among newer tech comm professionals and students. Students and new tech comm professionals are 14% and 9% of our membership. There are several ways to segment our SIG population, but these figures interested me the most.
